Charm Pack Quilt Pattern

2010 August 18

I posted this quilt pattern last winter on my old blog, but thought it would fit here, too.

Baby or Wall Quilt: 41” x 36”

Spring free quilt pattern

Materials:

  • I used 2 charm packs with a total of 36 5” squares for the stacks. You can also use your scraps as long as you can cut 2.5”x5” rectangles from it, or about 1 yd assorted fabrics (that’s generous!)
  • 2 yds 44” wide white fabric for the sashing, borders, binding and backing. I used an old twin flat sheet.
  • A piece of quilt batting 45”x40”, i.e. slightly larger than the finished quilt.

Cutting:

  • From fabric for the stacks cut 72 2.5”x5” rectangles: If you use the charm squares, just cut them in half to make the rectangles. If you use fat quarters or other yardage, cut 2.5” strips and then cut the strips into 5” pieces.
  • From white fabric cut 1.25 yds for backing and set aside.
  • From white fabric cut 2 strips 4”x29” and 2 strips 4”x42” for the borders.
  • From white fabric cut 20 rectangles 2”x6.5” and 3 strips 2”x35” for the sashing.
  • From remaining white fabric cut 1.5” bias strips for the binding.

NOTE: always cut the larger pieces and longer strips first! The smaller cuts will always fit the fabric left over. If you cut the smaller pieces first, the remaining fabric might not have enough continuous length and you’ll have to piece, for example, the border strips.

Quilt Assembly:

  • Arrange your 2.5”x5” rectangles into sets of 3 each.
  • Sew each set into a stack. You will have 24 stacks measuring 5”x6.5” each.

  • Connect 6 stacks with 5 sashing strips to make a row.

    Make 4 rows.
  • Connect the 4 rows with the 2”x35” sashing strips:

  • Layer and baste your finished top, batting and back.
  • Quilt – I used an all over stippling pattern. You can find a tutorial from Freda’s Hive here.
  • Attach your binding. Here is a great tutorial by Crazy Mom Quilts.
  • Celebrate your finished quilt!
